Hand Embroidered Sozni Jamawar cashmere pashmina. The shawl is named 'Tantra' (Sanskrit) literally meaning 'loom, warp, weave', the verbal root Tan means 'to extend', Tantra is all about awakening your true self through meditation. Embroidered using the traditional almond design of Kashmir in a colour theme inspired by the Tibetan mandala design.
The cashmere for this pashmina is woven in a twill weave has was hand-loomed and hand-woven using cashmere sourced from the Changthangi goats of Ladakh in 2020, and embroidered in a Sozni style (also known as sozan kaari), a technique originating from the Kashmir valley of Hazratbal in Northern India, over 500 years ago.
The embroidery for this stunning Sozni embroidered shawl took almost 11 months and was hand sewn by a single highly accomplished craftsman in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir, where hand embroidery is an age-old tradition. This is a wonderful example of classic needlework carried out by hand in pink, gold, orange and green thread on a rich carmine red cashmere.
The raw pashmina wool is collected from private herds of Changthani goats in Leh, Ladakh where temperatures can reach minus 35 degrees Celsius during winter in this cold desert region of the Himalayas. The cashmere is then washed, carded, and de-haired. De-hairing is the process of removing the guard hair (thick hair) from the pashmina fibres so that only the finest hairs remain. The cashmere from this region is considered amongst the best in the world, it is combed from the chest and underbelly of the goats. and is light and warm with amazing insulating properties, the fibres are extremely fine, varying between 9 - 16 microns.
The baby soft pashmina is then spun by hand converting the soft fibre into an ultrafine yarn that even modern technology would struggle to achieve. Hand spinning is a traditional craft in Kashmir.
The cashmere used in this shawl comes from Changthangi goats
Each pashmina is handled with great care and worked on by skilled individuals using traditional crafts and hand processes.
The shawl will be sent to you with a book 'The Kashmir Shawl' which will create a backdrop for you of the 'landscape and lives' where these shawls are created.
